Hello All,

Well I have 2 Min Pin´s...Brodie & Roxy......About a year ago Brodie the Male started to itch his eye really badly...he would literally rub his eye on the carpet as a means to scratch it. At the time I wasn´t living with my boyfriend and told him he needed to get him into the vet....well he waited tooo long He called me one day in a panic asking me to take Brodie to the vet because his eye had something over it...well come to find out he had gone partially blind in that eye. The vet said it was proably done by trauma to the eye (even though he could see nothing). He did many tests on his eye and nothing....he said it was allergies, gave him some drops and that was it. We stopped using them because they were doing nothing. Oh I forgot to mention he also will lose hair around his eyes if it gets really bad...which it does sometimes. Okay sorry if I gross anyone out., but he gets a mucus like substance that he cant get out of his eye, so we will have to clean it and pull it out for him or he will scratch more. Also my other Min Pin Roxy, gets cronic eye discharge (boogers basically...didnt want to be gross) and her eyes always look REALLY bad....and I clean them and 2 seconds later they are the same as before. Can someone PLEASE Help me with both situations? Maybe somebody has a Min pin or Dobie with the same issue???I don´t know if this runs in this bred or what!! I Neeeeedddd HELP!! I cant stand seeing that Brodie has gone partially blind in one eye due to scratching, and I dont want it to get worse!! Please help!!

Thank you,

~**~Roxy & Brodie~**~

I´m afraid I can´t help you, but yes: I´ve got a dob. And I know that dobs are subject to frequent eyes problems. Among other problems they have seasonal allergies, just like people. Sherman got better with age, but in the first years I had to wash his eyes every day - there was discharge in them.I you do it every day of the season, warm water is enough, but there are also some drops for it. You could even use the solution for eyes cleaning for humans.
But, obviously, you didn´t do it from the beginning. No idea which problems you may have with eyes that were not cared for from the start.
I also don´t know, if mini pinch have the same problem as dobermans.
For dobermans - if you want to breed the in France, an official, positive eye exam is mandatory. Apparently there are some genetic problems with their eyes. Personally, I know one doberman who had eyes problems from the very beginning, the owner attended to it as he could but the dog went stone blind at the age of 7 years - came from an uncertified breeder, possibly a genetic problem.
Since all pinchers look so much alike, there is a possibility of common health problems, but I´m no expert. Shouldn´t you call some pincher association? There must be something like that - they should know or at least give you some useful address of a specialist
