I´ve undergone surgery last July 25 ´coz my masters noticed a soft abdominal mass in the midline of my abdomen! They´ve freaked out ´coz it was fast growing! They immediately rushed me to my vets, and they have diagnosed me to have what is called an umbilical/abdominal hernia! This is a condition wherein my umbilical opening fails to close during my development, and it leaves a small opening in my abdominal muscle! This opening caused the descent of my omentum (connective apparatus of the intestine), so to close it up, my vets decided to do a surgery to correct the abnormality, and to prevent it from getting worse! The operation was succesful, i was put in GA, then I was loaded with local anesthetics so the procedure was quite painless! But the sad part is I was empty stomach for almost 24 hours! The next day after the operation, I was so active like as if nothing happened! There´s a little discomfort in the surgical site, but it is absolutely tolerable! My appetite din´t changed, but my vets still prescribed me with dextrose (in water), Cephalixin (antiB every 8 hours), Ornivita (supplement for newly operated dog like me, once a day, BTW, i hate the taste of it... hehe) and a topical lotion that is locally made ( twice a day)! Five days post-surgical, good prognosis, a little bit of inflammation on the site, but less pain! I am getting very well! Thanks to my masters, and to my vets!
Message from my masters: If you really love your dogs, please examine them clinically, check your pet´s whole body and note what is not within normal limits for you! For instance, our dog Sasha, I just palpated a small (more or less 2 cm) soft mass on her abdomen, and I know that it is something not normal for a dog, so we sought a professional opinion, and we found out that she has abdominal hernia! Actually, according to Sasha´s vet, if the condition is not corrected immediately, there will come a time that her intestine will descend also, then it will become fibrotic, and in the end become necrotic (because there will be no blood supply on that area, therefore no oxygen supply too), and it is fatal! So take care of your pet, be vigilant!
