Today Vincent was diagnosed with early Hip Dysplasia. I´ve been expecting it since I´ve gotten him, since Corgi´s have a tendency to get it. Even when I was expecting the worst, it´s still hard to hear that the worst has come. If there is any advice everyone could give me, then that would be a great deal of help for both me and Vincent.

I am so sorry to hear that Masetis! Was it an OFA exam? Did they tell you how bad it is?

They said it´s mild, and only in his right hip. I saw the x-rays. They said it´s early in the problem and it´s good that we´re knowing about it before it´s bad. I don´t think it was an OFA exam. They just took x-rays and moved his leg alot.

Glucosamine condroitin is a suplement that helps dogs with HD. My bloodhound has very bad HD. We give her a Glucosamine pill in the morning and at night and she is pretty normal right now. Also we have to restrict her excercise. She cant run too much because it will agrivate her condition. Make sure your dog is the proper weight. Extra weight adds to the stress on the hip. Swimming is a low impact excercise that will build the muscle in the hip without hurting it. Just dont over do it. It probably wasnt a Penn hip exam because that is pretty expensive. They have to send the xrays in to a national registry.

Maseis hasn´t logged in for 2 months....I hope Vincent is doing ok. My Sam had severe hip dysplasia....when we looked at the xrays we could see that the ball joint was nowhere near the hip socket. His only option at 8 months old was a TPO...triple pelvic osteotomy. One of the top US surgeons has married an Aussie and moved (much to our good luck) to Melbourne...just a few minutes away. We could have had a less expensive surgery with a 100% chance that it´ll never happen again, but he´d walk like a crab all his life and not be able to run.....or we could have the more expensive surgery with a 90-95% chance of never having a relapse.....but he´d be able to walk and run as though his hips were perfect from birth. We opted to give him a normal life (as long as possible) They said that if it ever recurs....we could have the other surgery at that time. Now he runs and plays like you wouldn´t believe. We hope it lasts for years and years. Be sure to check out the pictures of Sammy running on the beach......looking at those, we know that he´s one happy dog.....and we probably made the right decision.

I know! Henry and Bear have both been quite expensive in their own time but I think that seeing them so low and feeling so bad and being able to help them has been a large part of the reason that I´m so bonded to them.

hi nero my 7 month old black lab has HD in both hips, I noticed something wrong at 5 months old had an xray and sadly it was HD,not a good feeling, for you feel the dogs pain, he has had his first operation on the first hip 4 weeks ago TPO and now is full of life hair growing quickly, now next week his second op not lookin forward to that but I know its for the best for nero because he loves to run on the beach swim and play with all the other dogs without the ops that would not be possible the cost was for both 2000euros it will be money well spent to give nero a quality of life that was no falt of his own but of human tampering with iterbreeding blood lines to get the perfect dog when will this evil practise be stopped.
