This condition[or "instinct?"] does have a name...Im sure someone who replies in a bit will know it better. Iv seen some dogs that go through it as a phase which doesnt last long either but each case is different im sure. Good luck getting it all worked out.

My dog did it once. He hasn´t done it since. It freaked me out to.

really? what did you do to make him stop eating his poo? is it just out of curiosity? or is it a phase where a dog needs to be trained?

well im no professional but if you take him on a walk keep him close by so he doesn´t get to the poop ok.
and if he doesn´t really go out side much then pick up his poop before he gets to it ok.

Hi how you doing
well yes that have a name a calls( coprophagia")

While it is an extremely disgusting habit to us, it is not harmful to your dog if he eats his own feces. However if he eats another dog’s feces, he could get parasites from it if it has been sitting too long. This could happen with your own dogs feces, so be sure to scoop it up as soon as you can.

There is a way to keep them from eating their own feces. You can put meat tenderizer, garlic, or pumpkin powder on their food, which will make the feces unappealing to them. This would only keep them from eating their own feces of course. In your case, all of your dogs would be protected from eating one another’s feces.

There are several reasons that dogs eat their feces. It could be from boredom or anxiety or the lack of nutrients in their diet. Be sure that they are fed a high quality natural dog food. If you are in doubt, a rule of thumb is not to buy any dog food from a grocery store, only from a high quality pet store. Do not buy food that includes by-products, corn, soy, wheat, gluten or artificial flavors or coloring.

Coprophagia is perfectly normal so it´s not a "condition"- carnivores in nature do it all the time so they would get a maximum usage of the food they previously ate- they re-ingest it and in that way get some more nutrients that weren´t able to absorb the first time.

So no matter what "experts" say (boredom, lack of nutrients) the main reason they do it is INSTINCT.

Try feeding him the best food possible and never EVER punish him for eating feces- it´s like punishing your dog for drooling when he smells food.
You can try the "make it unappealing" method but make sure he doesn´t connect YOU with the bad smelling/tasting feces- hope you understand what I mean.
What I used to do is keep a very close eye on her and when she tried to do it I´d distract her with something else: toy or a treat- or just start running and calling her.
It worked, though I think it would be just a short phase anyways that lots of puppies go through.

okays thanks for this idea

So no matter what "experts" say (boredom, lack of nutrients) the main reason they do it is INSTINCT.Speaks the voice of reason. My dog doesn´t eat his own poo, but he will eat cat poo or "specially appealing" poo from other dogs. It is perfectly natural though disgusting to us. But so is the willy washing and a lot of other stuff. I also try and distract Mikkel from eating poo - more for my own sake, as I am the one to kiss him later

So we find it gross and disgusting, which it is to us, but then we aren´t dogs. Dogs like to roll in poo too. Mikkel loves a good roll in foxes poo or pee, if given the chance.

Mikkels MumOkay thanks. Little by little im beginning to understand that dogs eat poo. I thought that it could be some disorder of mental factor that makes him eat his poo. thank to all of you guys for helping me out here. Its a good thing that there are more experienced dog owners here who share a thing or two to less experienced dog owners. Thanks again!
